connector 1. Housing – Plastic shell that snaps into other parts. 2. Pin – Metal terminals that make contact in a connector. 3. Contacts – Soldered or crimped onto wire end to make an electrical connection. 4. Guide Post – Used as an alignment tool for mating parts. 5. Extractor Tool – Used to remove the connector from its mating part. 6. Guide Pin Lock – A secondary lock which prevents the connector from coming apart. 7. Strain Relief – Securely clamps the wire to the connector and the connector to the mating part. 8. Pin Housing – A molded plastic piece which holds the pin in place. 9. Tabs – Easily visible ridges for an easier grip. 10. Insulator – Keeps wires insulated against other metal parts. 11. Crimp Indent – The shallow indentation on the inner diameter of the contact used to secure the wire. 12. Pin Insulator – A plastic insert which keeps the pins in place. 13. Crimping Die – A metal frame that fits onto a crimping tool and compresses the pin into the insulator. 14. Cavity – An indentation in the housing that fits a pin, contact or a tab. 15. Fingers – Extend from the strain relief and latch to a PCB or the mating part. 16. Insulator Retainer – Holds the insulators in place. 17. Contact Carrier – A piece that holds and protects contacts when the connector is in its mating housing. 18. Peel Back – The tabs that hold the contact carriers together and prevent contact with other components. 19. Contacts Retainer – A molded part with fingers which helps to secure the contacts in the correct position. 20. Contact Block – The molded block which holds the contacts in place. 21. Contact Block Retainer – A tiny clip that holds the contact block in place. 22. Crimp Barrel – The metal attachment which secures the conductor to the contact. 23. Strain Relief Lock – A mechanism which locks the strain relief firmly in place. 24. Seam Seal – Secures wire in the connector and also seals the back of the connector. 25. Locking Tabs – Thin tabs which slide into the housing to secure and lock the connector. 26. Contacts Holder – An extra placeholder which fits into the housing and keeps the contacts in the correct position. 27. Clip – Simplifies assembly by keeping the components together. 28. Gasket – Creates a watertight seal around the connection. 29. Conductor – Metal wire that carries an electrical signal. 30. Cap – Covers the housing and prevents accidental contact with the pins. 31. Screws – Secure the entire connector assembly together. 32. Plug – The mating portion of the connector which is inserted into the connector. 33. Stopbar – Prevents the plug being inserted too far into the connector. 34. Chassis Flange – Keeps the connector assembly and housing secured to the chassis. 35. Indexing Post – Used to align two mating parts together and keep them in a predetermined orientation. 36. Metal Plate – Securely mounts the connector to the surface it is mounted to and helps keep it from moving. 37. Board Lock – Used to attach the connector to the printed circuit board. 38. EMI / RFI Protection – A cover designed to suppress electromagnetic fields. 39. Hanger Bracket – Securely mounts the connector to the PCB. 40. Sealing Ring – Creates a protective watertight seal when mating parts are connected. 41. Quick Disconnect – Used to quickly connect and disconnect wires from the connector. 42. Metal Shell – Provides strength and insulation to the connector. 43. Spacer – The space between the electrical contacts used to hold the contacts in place. 44. Retainer - A spring loaded device which helps to ensure that the pins are held in the correct position. 45. Flydisc – A plastic or metal disc used to maintain contact pressure. 46. Shield – Surrounds the contacts and helps prevent EMI interference. 47. Bodyshell – The large enclosing or surrounding part of the connector. 48. Keyed Pin – A pin that provides an anti-vibration or anti-rotation feature. 49. Boot – Non-conductive plastic sleeve that increases the separation between the contacts. 50. Index Ring – A cover that is designed to turn around the connector and provides an index for mating parts.
