Fathometer is an acoustic instrument used in oceanography to measure the depth of the ocean, usually in meters. The 96236 part specifically refers to the model number of the Fathometer, which is a low-frequency, high-resolution echosounding system. This model is designed for high-resolution seabed mapping, and includes a bottom profiling mode, collision avoidance from a secure depth measurement mode and a real-time depth tracking mode. It is capable of providing seafloor depth readings with accuracy up to 1 cm, and is able to store up to 1000 bathymetric readings.
