MAX17003A/MAX17004A 19-0837 Rev 0 6/07 High-Efficiency, Quad-Output, Main Power- Supply Controllers for Notebook Computers General Description Features The MAX17003A/MAX17004A are dual step-down, Fixed-Frequency, Current-Mode Control switch-mode, power-supply (SMPS) controllers with 40/60 Optimal Interleaving synchronous rectification, intended for main 5V/3.3V Internal BST Switches power generation in battery-powered systems. Fixed- Internal 5V, 100mA Linear Regulator frequency operation with optimal interleaving minimizes Auxiliary Linear-Regulator Driver (12V or input ripple current from the lowest input voltages up to Adjustable Down to 1V) the 26V maximum input. Optimal 40/60 interleaving allows the input voltage to go down to 8.3V before duty- Dual Mode Feedback3.3V/5V Fixed or cycle overlap occurs, compared to 180 out-of-phase Adjustable Output Voltages regulators where the duty-cycle overlap occurs when 200kHz/300kHz/500kHz Switching Frequency the input drops below 10V. Undervoltage and Thermal-Fault Protection Output current sensing provides peak current-limit pro- Overvoltage-Fault Protection (MAX17003A Only) tection, using either an accurate sense resistor or using 6V to 26V Input Range lossless inductor DCR current sensing. Independent Enable Inputs and Power-Good Outputs An internal, fixed 5V, 100mA linear regulator powers up the MAX17003A/MAX17004A and their gate drivers, as Soft-Start and Soft-Discharge (Voltage Ramp) well as external keep-alive loads. When the main PWM 8A (typ) Shutdown Current regulator is in regulation, an automatic bootstrap switch bypasses the internal linear regulator, providing current Ordering Information up to 200mA. An additional adjustable linear-regulator driver with an external pnp transistor can be used with a TEMP PKG PART PIN-PACKAGE secondary winding to provide a 12V supply, or powered RANGE CODE directly from the main outputs to generate low-voltage -40C to 32 Thin QFN MAX17003AETJ+ T3255-4 outputs as low as 1V. +85C (5mm x 5mm) Independent enable controls and power-good signals -40C to 32 Thin QFN MAX17004AETJ+ T3255-4 allow flexible power sequencing.
